Matthew Clark

Matt’s “why”

I choose to share what I’ve gained from my extraordinary opportunities as a surgeon, teacher, and leader to improve the wellbeing of individuals and our community, with optimism and humour.

A bit about me...

  • LinkedIn

I am a broadly experienced General Surgeon, and passionate about quality, training, and assessment. I have an ongoing role at Middlemore Hospital on the elective and emergency general surgery service, which complements my private work. I am an active teacher, and have an honorary Associate Professorship at the University of Auckland.

I have recently completed the role of Chief Medical Officer for Southern Cross Healthcare after four years, where I helped manage our response to the Covid-19 pandemic and then shared launching the 2033 Strategy. I have also had the privilege of being the Chief Examiner in General Surgery for RACS New Zealand, after 9 years on the Court of Examiners.

I am approachable and non-judgmental, an ally to the LGBTI+ community, and a proponent for equity in Aotearoa. I’m happy to provide second opinions on all aspects of surgery, and subsequently refer on to expert colleagues when needed.

Memberships: Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS); Institute of Directors of NZ; Royal Society of New Zealand.

Awards: Outstanding Achievement, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (x3)
